Tips To Help Montana Wheat Growers Start The Season Strong
2019 was a challenging year for many growers, and Montana was no exception, as a cool, wet season made for a late harvest and lower-than-typical yields. Mother Nature can’t get the best of wheat growers, however; resilient by nature, you’re hard at work preparing for 2020.
How can Montana growers set the stage for success in the new year? While there’s no “one size fits all” solution, there are some tips to help you get the job done right.
1. It starts with variety selection. Consider planting multiple products with varying maturities, and look for varieties that offer high yield potential, good protein, excellent standability and good disease and insect tolerance.
2. Use an Optimal Seeding Rate. Planting based on seeds per acre, versus pounds per acre, can maximize performance.
3. Manage fertilizer all season long. Soil test and manage fertility accordingly to meet top yield and protein potential.
4. Know your weed and disease nemeses. While new ones pop up, Montana growers can anticipate and plan for common conditions like Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, Wheat Stem Sawfly and Fusarium Head Blight.
5. If irrigation is available, practice optimal irrigation management. Irrigation during key stages (the boot, bloom and milk stages and after the soft dough stage) can be key to avoiding yield loss.
